TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: PREVIEW MAGAZINE, the Philippines' Fashion Bible

I am getting pumped for my next trip to The Philippines (whenever this may be) and yes, there are a lot of things I could get excited about, like the food, the atmosphere, seeing my relatives and just simply being submerged in my culture but being a true fashionista at heart, I am (regrettably) fixated on the current state of our country's (or at least Manila's) fashion. All I can think of is what to wear and what to pack. Naturally, I decide to flip through our nation's bible for style and all things modern, trendy and classic: PREVIEW.

Anyway, I built myself a hefty collection during my last visit (they sell back issues there which is awesome for us "balikbayans" who can't subscribe) but of course, I wasn't lucky enough to purchase the ones sold after my departure. Luckily, they have a lot of the content posted on their website: http://www.stylebible.ph/ a must-click if you are interested in this aspect of The Philippines. The website's structure is very similar to VOGUE's style.com but different because of what's featured - either way, it's a great source for all things fashion-related.

By the way, I made the collage above to showcase and pay some respect to PREVIEW's incredible covers in the past few years.

A special note to those who have this preconceived notion that Filipinos back "home" are tacky, do yourself a favor, place your ignorance in your back pocket for just one minute and grab a copy of PREVIEW to see that we're not all baduy.

Feeling empowered by my Filipina (and some half Filipina) sisters,
Justine

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Large-chested Women CAN wear suspenders!

I know. She doesn't exactly have the biggest bazoongas but her shirt is STILL an option for us large-chested women to finally sport some suspenders. I would love to get this shirt in black and white. I would also love to get her face haha. What a pretty girl.
Just sayin...

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Christine Centenera in Baggy Jeans

Photo taken from STOCKHOLM-STREETSTYLE.COM
"CAN I GET A WHAT WHAT?" (Jay-Z feat. Amil and Ja Rule) is the line that popped into my head when I first saw this photo. How hot and gangster are these jeans that she's wearing? I can't get over them. All I have to say to end this post is: "Now can you bounce wit me, uhh... Bounce wit me, bounce wit me... Can ya can ya can ya bounce with me, bounce with me..."

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Okay fine but I'm not spending more than $20

Photo from The Sartorialist
I am so NOT one to go shopping for secondhand clothes (I know, I'm horrible) but I am going to give it a (second) try and go VV/Consignment store shopping with my BFF (maybe tomorrow?). My hope is to find colorful blazers with gold buttons like the one shown above. A red, pink or teal one would be amazing. If I walk away with nothing, I'd be okay with that too :p

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Kim Kardashian's make-up

After discovering I have E! (channel 88 here in Vancouver), I've been watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians a lot lately and have opted to try and do my make-up like them once and a while. If you've got the time, tools and eagerness to learn, have a look at these videos (4-part series) to get a lesson on how you too, can achieve Kim's look.

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Nicole Richie's Messy Bun (hair-do)

Nicole Richie
I've always been obsessed with putting my hair up in a messy bun, mostly after seeing Japanese girls and Nicole Richie with this style. I grew up putting my hair in half buns (especially while playing sports since there were really only three styles back then: pony tails, french braids or the half bun) but the half bun just isn't chic enough at this age. There are several ways to get your hair up in a messy bun and after doing some YouTube research, I found and posted a few that I found useful, each showing a different technique depending on the length of your hair or the amount of time you have getting ready. Bonne chance!

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Hair Color for this Summer

I just came back from date night with the husband and after watching No Strings Attached and seeing Natalie Portman's streaked hair (first seen and coveted in The Black Swan), I am reminded of how I'd like to go lighter this summer in terms of hair color.

I can't believe it's been at least 4 years since I wanted to get dark green and red streaks in my hair (no, it's not as bad as it sounds). I was inspired by this girl who cut my hair once because the streaks just looked so amazing mixed in with the rest of her jet black hair, which is kind of what I've got now. The only reason I didn't go through with it was because the process was too expensive for this "Broke Fashionista" (just to give you an idea, it would've run me close to $250 for a fewer number of streaks than your usual all over color. In short: it just wasn't worth it). Anyway, that "goth" chapter of my life is now closed (along with the 6 ear piercings I got that same year) but I am still interested in getting a new look for this summer.

Keeping my history of bad hair coloring experiences in mind, I am a bit hesitant to go too drastic in case a) it doesn't turn out the way I had hoped and/or b) I can't take care of it and my hair breaks or falls out :/

Here are the 2 options I've laid out for myself:

Khloe Kardashian > Chocolate Brown
This has been my dream hair color since forever ago. I've tried a million different places and only succeeded once - only because they bleached my hair to the point where it was blonde and orange and fixed it by coloring it dark brown the next day. I'm hoping this next experience will be successful on the first attempt as I am not prepared to fry my hair and look like an Asian Gwen Stefani again (or worse, see zero changes).

PS - I know some of you are going to quickly judge that I chose Khloe as my inspiration but too bad, I like her! Despite her giant stature and annoying baby voice, I am a fan and love that she isn't another petite reality star ie. Audrina Patridge :p

Mila Kunis - Ombre
Rumi Neely > Ombre
Alexa Chung > Ombre
Rachel Bilson > Ombre
I'm sure those of you who have black hair (like me) understand what a pain it is to have to get your roots done every so often to match the rest of your colored locks.Well I for one, don't have the time or money for upkeep SO I thought why not take advantage of this trend that celebrates our "roots" (yes, I know. I am the queen of puns)! Following the ombre hair trend this summer is also an option for me but has as much downs as it does ups. While I don't have to worry about keeping my roots in check, I do worry about the black not lifting enough resulting in the ends being more of a sassy orange instead of blonde or light brown. Also, what if the transition looks like (for the lack of a better word) crap? Lastly and more importantly, what if I look silly OR just look like someone who can't afford to get my roots done?! *enter DUN DUN DUN and sound of lightening*

*A few minutes later* After writing and thinking this through, I think I have finally come to a decision! You can probably all guess which one I chose but why would I pass up the chance to hold you all in suspense? You'll have to wait a couple of months to see!

Your sneaky little bugger,
Justine

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: My go-to dress to hide my large chest (no rhyme intended)

Photo from People StyleWatch

This probably isn't a common problem that women talk about - actually, it might be the opposite of what women mostly complain about but there are times when having a large chest can be quite annoying (trust me, I speak from experience - currently, I am a double D). We busty women don't all have the same ultra-petite frame as Pamela Anderson so it is really challenging to look slim when we've got twin Kilimanjaros sticking out of our chest, pulling the rest of our top away from our body - only making us look much bigger than we truly are.

I've read lots of articles on what to wear to suit my specific body type and I can personally attest to the dress type shown above on Kim Kardashian, Olivia Wilde and Katrina Bowden. This dress doesn't need to be black or sparkly, it just needs to have this neckline (avoid showing cleavage) and sleeves that go past the elbows (go any shorter and the largest part of your arm is accentuated by the opening of the sleeve). In fact, with spring/summer coming up, you can be sure to find this dress with floral or lighter patterns. Oh and did I mention that the shorter your dress is the better? If you have a large chest, chances are, your legs will look long and lean (and sometimes, they actually are because of the weight we bare on them each day), so why not shave and oil up those babies or stick some hot pantyhose or lace tights on and focus the attention on them?

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: The Bachelor's "contestants" 2011

I'm not a big fan of The Bachelor but I have been occasionally tuning in this year because I noticed the women aka "contestants" are actually pretty attractive this season. I've often found myself saying "oh, she's pretty" and if you know me like my husband does, you'd know that the plot and level of acting take a back seat when potentially gorgeous make-up and clothing are involved in a show or a movie.

While channel surfing, I caught a scene between Chantal and The Bachelor (I haven't watched it enough to even know the guy's name). The scene was very cliche, involving dialogue like "oh, I'm not sure I'm ready to open up... I've been hurt before" so I focused on Chantal instead. I totally admire her olive colored skin and the possibility of getting freckles in the summer (I've always wanted them since seeing that Asian people could have them as per Lucy Liu). I also love her chocolate brown hair - a color I've been longing to have since the beginning of time (trying again this summer)! I know, this is a horrible picture of Chantal but geez, I wasn't going to stand in front of the TV the entire night to capture a photo of her on my Berry. I just want her skin and hair color but I'm not THAT creepy lol.

So here comes the "Fashion Inspiration" part... I've been style stalking bloggers and fashionistas from Europe so much, I completely forgot that women are still actually allowed to wear shimmery make-up, work-out clothes, torn jeans, racer-back tank tops and sunglasses on their head (not to mention UGGS in previous seasons). European fashion is usually so simple, structured, strict and modern, especially compared to the West Coast outdoors-y style that it leaves little room to feel cozy or the option to sit on a log in front of a camp fire (can you imagine if a pair of YSL shoes caught on fire? yikes). So after watching a bit of this show, I'm reminded that I am still in North America where it is okay to relax and wear outfits that aren't meant for front seat paparazzi photos at a fashion show once and a while

Here are some more "everyday" looks from People's Style Watch:

TBF FASHION INSPIRATION: Alexa Chung on NYC vs. ENGLAND

My absolute favorite part is when she describes London as her husband and Williamsburg as her lover.
